We created this new kitchen and family room using space both in a new addition and in the gutted portion of the existing urban dwelling. The owner wanted to be able to tie the kitchen to the yard for cooking and entertaining, so we raised the yard a few feet between the house and the garage to bring it closer to the floor level of the house. The kitchen layout is a variation of our two kitchen concept, although due to space constraints the clean up area is a bit smaller than usual. We designed the interior millwork and other details to create a bridge between the existing Victorian character of the house and the owner's modern yet eclectic style. The cabinets are rift white oak veneer with a white matte lacquer. The very modern flush cabinet doors are set in a frame which gives a slightly more traditional feel to the cabinets while also making them more custom and unique. The cabinetry continues the length of the room and becomes a bookcase in the family room section. Tall units on each side of the range nook conceal a coat closet on one end and a full height appliance garage on the other.
